Unilateral exercises provide numerous benefits in building strength and stability, as well as injury prevention. Hence, they should be incorporated into every personal training plan, both for athletes and recreational sports enthusiasts.
Characteristics of one-sided exercises
One-sided exercises, also known as unilateral exercises, are a type of exercises that require greater activity of one arm or one leg. They are divided into contralateral exercises, which utilize movements of the opposite limb, and ipsilateral exercises, which involve movements of the limb on the same side of the body. Examples of one-sided exercises for the lower body are steps, and for the upper body - pressing with one hand over the head. One-sided exercises differ from bilateral exercises due to their less stable nature and are often used in rehabilitation and to improve strength deficits or body asymmetries. Therefore, it is worth including them in your training program, especially since many basic movements during training occur in the sagittal plane with emphasis on working both sides. However, the human body is naturally asymmetrical, and the lack of one-sided exercises can lead to deepening dysproportions and compensations.
