Every physical activity involves the generation of energy that allows our muscles to operate. Depending on the goal we have in mind, our body makes use of various energy sources.
What truly constitutes energy and from which sources does the human body derive it?
The fundamental energy currency within the human body is **adenosine triphosphate (ATP)**, a biochemical compound composed of three essential constituents: the **nitrogenous base adenine**, the **five-carbon sugar ribose**, and **three phosphate groups**, interconnected via **high-energy phosphoanhydride bonds**. The generation of energy hinges upon the **hydrolytic cleavage of a single phosphate group**, thereby converting ATP into **adenosine diphosphate (ADP)**—a molecule retaining only two phosphate groups. The human organism employs diverse biochemical pathways to **restore the third phosphate group**, thereby facilitating the **resynthesis of ATP**. This regenerative process may occur through three primary mechanisms: **anaerobic phosphagen and glycolytic conversions** (under oxygen-deficient conditions) and via the **aerobic system**, wherein oxidative reactions predominate over anaerobic ones.
