Electrolytes – a concise overview
Electrolytes are minuscule salt ion particles present in the human body. They are intricately linked to the body's water balance, as they are primarily stored in bodily fluids such as blood, plasma, and tissue fluids. These particles can exist as cations (positively charged ions) or anions (negatively charged ions). Among cations are sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, while anions include bicarbonates, chlorides, phosphates, sulfates, organic acids, and proteins. Each of these electrolytes plays a vital role in the body. Maintaining their proper concentration is crucial for the proper functioning of the nervous, muscular, and cardiovascular systems.
