Overweight has become an increasingly prevalent issue, affecting both adults and children alike. It is a serious ailment that comes with numerous negative health implications and increases the risk of many other diseases. Its treatment poses a significant challenge, and yet it is often heard that simply cutting down on calorie intake and increasing physical activity is enough to regain health. Is that truly the reason why such a large number of individuals are unable to deal with this problem?
Obesity – fundamental concepts and characteristics of metabolic disorder
Obesity constitutes a complex, chronic metabolic disorder that affects individuals across all age groups—from children to adults. Its defining feature is the pathological accumulation of adipose tissue within the body, which disrupts systemic homeostasis. The diagnostic criterion remains the body mass index (BMI), with values exceeding 29.0 kg/m² serving as a definitive indicator of the condition. This phenomenon is escalating globally, with particularly high prevalence rates observed in highly industrialized societies where energy-dense, processed diets predominate. Paradoxically, despite improved access to nutritious food and diverse opportunities for physical activity, the incidence of obesity continues to rise. According to statistical data from Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS), the condition affects 15.2% of Polish women and 18.1% of men. The primary etiologic factor appears to be a persistent energy imbalance—caloric intake consistently surpasses the body’s energy expenditure. Research indicates that approximately 21% of the general female population experiences recurrent episodes of binge eating (M. Makara-Studzińska et al., 2007). While isolated incidents may not necessarily lead to overweight, their frequent occurrence significantly elevates the risk of obesity development. A critical component of both prevention and treatment lies in comprehensively understanding the underlying mechanisms driving excessive food consumption, which extend beyond mere increased appetite.
