Why Dried Fruits Surpass Conventional Sweets
Conventional candies deliver empty calories devoid of micronutrient density, generating sharp glycemic and insulin surges. In contrast, dried fruits concentrate virtually all the mineral reserves of fresh fruit, and their rich dietary fiber matrices moderate gastric emptying and glucose absorption.
Dried Prunes and Apricots – Bowel Regularity and Micronutrients
Dried prunes serve as an evidence-based clinical aid for sluggish intestinal motility due to their synergy of sorbitol and soluble pectins. Unsulphured dried apricots are powerhouses of provitamin A (beta-carotene), potassium, and non-heme iron, supporting hemopoiesis and arterial compliance.
Dried Cranberries – Urinary Tract Protection
Cranberries are endowed with unique A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs), which biochemically inhibit the adherence of uropathogenic Escherichia coli to the bladder mucosal urothelium. When purchasing, seek out varieties sweetened with concentrated apple juice rather than refined sucrose.
Dates and Figs – Optimal Pre- and Post-Workout Energy
Medjool dates and dried figs function as nature's energy gels for athletes. Abundant in rapid-acting carbohydrates, magnesium, and bioavailable calcium, they replenish muscle glycogen stores efficiently before or immediately following strenuous physical training.
Smart Selection of Dried Fruits: Avoiding Sulphur Dioxide
Many industrially produced dried fruits are treated with sulphur dioxide (E220) to artificially preserve bright coloration. Genuine, unsulphured dried fruits exhibit naturally darker, brownish tones, are safe for asthmatics, and do not irritate gastric mucosa. Always inspect ingredient labels carefully.
Nut variety - an overview
There are many types of nuts available in Poland, each with its own unique properties. They include: - almonds (fruit of the common almond tree), - Brazil nuts (fruit of the nut tree), - kidney nuts (fruit of the western kidney nut tree), - Italian nuts (fruit of the Italian nut tree), - hazelnuts (fruit of the common hazel), - macadamia nuts (fruit of the macadamia plant), - pecans (fruit of the edible nut tree), - pine nuts (seed nuts of the pine tree), - pistachios (fruit of the true pistachio), - peanuts (seeds of the peanut). Despite the high fat content in nuts, which can reach up to 75% in macadamia nuts, they should not be avoided. Only small amounts of saturated fatty acids are present in them (up to 16%). Nuts are rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (MUFA/PUFA), proteins (including L-arginine, which is necessary for proper functioning of blood vessels) and fiber. Nuts are also a source of magnesium, potassium and calcium. In addition, they contain many polyphenols. The majority of antioxidant compounds are found in the outer layer of the nuts. Those who discard the delicate shell also throw away many health-promoting ingredients (up to 50%). Many epidemiological studies have confirmed a link between nut consumption and a reduction in the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and inflammatory diseases. Consumption of nuts brings not only long-term benefits, but also immediate benefits after consumption. After a meal containing nuts, a moderate (less sudden compared to a meal rich in animal fat) increase in triglyceride levels, glucose and inflammatory compounds can be observed.
Pumpkin seeds - an excellent snack
Pumpkin seeds serve as a snack that is often used as an addition to other dishes. It is noteworthy that they are rich in iron, copper, zinc, niacin, and vitamin E. Scientific studies indicate that consuming 30 g of pumpkin seeds daily for 4 weeks improves iron economy in the body. Incorporating these seeds into the diet may be beneficial for pregnant women, young people, and individuals particularly susceptible to iron deficiency anemia.
The sunflower seeds
are an exceptionally good source of zinc, magnesium, and folic acid. They exhibit a considerable antioxidant potential. Likely, consuming sunflower seeds reduces the risk of breast cancer in women after menopause;
Seeds deriving from sesame
They are generally utilised as a supplement, for example, on a hamburger bun. This is a significant loss because sesame seeds can possess considerable potential, particularly in regulating the lipid profile. In one of the pharmacologically studied cases, individuals with arthritis consumed 40 grams of sesame seeds daily over a span of 2 months. In these individuals, compared to those who did not incorporate seeds into their diet, there was a substantial decrease in concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL, and one of the markers of oxidative stress.
Seeds from the chia plant
are renowned for their high fiber content (over 30 g/100 g) and protein content. Due to their high omega-3 content, they are used as few plant-based products in the production of a highly concentrated oil, which serves as a source of these fatty acids. Chia seeds have been classified in the so-called functional food group by the European Parliament. All cocktails with the addition of chia seeds are excellent desserts, effectively curbing the craving for other sweet snacks;
Flaxseed grains
They are also categorized as functional food items, primarily due to their high levels of alpha-linolenic acid, lignins, and fiber components. Consuming flaxseed grains can aid in preventing diseases of the circulatory system, including arteriosclerosis, arthritis, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. It should be noted that to fully utilize their properties, the seeds must first be milled, e.g. in a coffee grinder. This should ideally be done immediately before consumption, as the fat contained in flaxseed grains is highly volatile and prone to oxidation.
A brief outline of dried fruit products
Dried fruits, grains, and nuts make for excellent snacks. They can be combined with yogurt, kefir, fresh fruit. Each of these products boasts numerous potential health benefits. However, it is crucial to remember that nuts can induce significant allergic reactions. On the other hand, dried fruits, due to their high level of simple sugars, can considerably raise blood glucose levels, which is significant for diabetics to consider. It is best to consume dried fruits with yogurt or oatmeal to decelerate glucose absorption in the digestive tract.
