A fundamental condition for the proper functioning of the human body is the provision of essential mineral compounds. They should be included in the diet or taken as supplements, as the body is not able to synthesize them on its own. This group of compounds, referred to as exogenous, do not provide energy but play a crucial role in the processes occurring in the organism. One of these elements is zinc, which has a significant impact on the proper functioning of the body by participating in immunological processes as well as the regeneration and renewal of tissues.
The impact of zinc on the human body and its role in physiological processes
Zinc is present in every human tissue, found in the greatest amounts in bones, muscles, and skin, but also in appropriate quantities in the liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and brain (M. Michalak et al. 2021). It is essential for many physiological processes, such as blood clotting, fat and alcohol metabolism, insulin storage in the pancreas, and its release. Zinc also supports the regeneration of skin, hair, and nails by participating in collagen metabolism. As an antioxidant, it protects the body from the harmful effects of free radicals, supports vision, reduces skin damage from UV radiation, and participates in immune processes. Research has shown that zinc can be particularly effective in treating herpes simplex (HSV), warts (HPV), and colds by shortening the duration of the infection and its symptoms (H.R. Godfrey et al. 2001; A.S. Prasad et al. 2008; E.-E.M. Mohamed, K.M. Tawfik, A.M. Mahmoud 2016). Medications and cosmetics containing zinc in various forms have astringent, anti-inflammatory, acne-inhibiting, and skin-cleansing effects, removing excess sebum.
