The main areas where this plant is found are West Asia, the countries of the Mediterranean basin and the Canary Islands. In Poland, it can only be found on crops. The flowers of this shrub typically reach a height of 2.5 to 7.5 cm. The color of the petals varies and depends on the species. The most common cultivated varieties are: the Cretan cleansing plant, which has pink flowers; the gray cleansing plant, also known as the silver cleansing plant, which has characteristic wrinkled, oval leaves and pink flowers; the ladanum cleansing plant, which is also known as the resinous cleansing plant and has white flowers with a dark eye; and the laurus cleansing plant, which is also known as the laurel cleansing plant and has white flowers with a yellow center.
