Nearly 30% of epilepsy patients do not respond to pharmacological treatment. This condition, known as drug-resistant epilepsy, can be treated surgically, but not everyone qualifies for such a procedure. Over the past years, numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the impact of diet on the treatment outcome of drug-resistant epilepsy.
What is the nature of Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects roughly 0.5-1% of the global population. In Poland, nearly 400,000 people are affected by the disease. Studies indicate that it is more prevalent in men than in women. It is characterized by seizures associated with sudden impairments of brain function (A. Verrotti et al. 2020). The causes of epilepsy can be attributed to damage that occurred during fetal life, metabolic disorders, both genetic and developmental, however, in many cases, the cause of the disease remains unknown. Epilepsy is often solely associated with seizures, loss of consciousness, and stiffness of the body, however, symptoms can vary depending on the type of epilepsy.
