Gestational diabetes poses a significant challenge in contemporary obstetrics and gynecology. Its occurrence during pregnancy demands special attention as it can lead to complications for both the course of pregnancy and the health of the mother and developing fetus. Consequently, accurate diagnosis, conscious monitoring of risk factors, and effective therapy play a crucial role in limiting complications and ensuring safety during this specific period. Thanks to the progress in medical science, it is possible to effectively manage gestational diabetes, which translates into chances for a healthy pregnancy and normal development of the newborn.
Gestational diabetes and diabetes occurring during the course of pregnancy
Gestational diabetes is a disturbance in the metabolism of carbohydrates that occurs for the first time during the course of pregnancy and usually subsides after birth. On the other hand, diabetes in pregnancy means that a woman had diabetes prior to becoming pregnant (type 1 or 2) or was diagnosed very early in pregnancy and persists even after its conclusion. Differentiating between these conditions is of utmost importance as it affects the methods of treatment and further care after birth (ADA 2024).
