Excess weight and obesity are very serious issues that pose a significant public health challenge. Notwithstanding the increasing awareness of the consequences associated with being overweight, the incidence of these conditions rises year after year. Unhealthy habits, poor diet, but also genetic predispositions play a significant role in the development of obesity.
The notion of obesity
Obesity is a condition where surplus and/or unnatural accumulation of fat tissue in the body is observed, leading to an increase in body weight. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is a disease in which unnatural accumulation of fat tissue occurs, which can result in many disorders in the functioning of the body (M. Wąsowska, M. Walicka, E. Marcinowska-Suchowierska 2013). Depending on where the fat tissue is amassed, two types of obesity can be distinguished: abdominal obesity (androidal) and gluteal-femoral obesity (gynoidal).
