Estrogen predominance, also referred to as estrogen dominance, is a hormonal state in which estrogen levels in the body are disproportionately high compared to other hormones such as progesterone. Estrogens, most closely associated with the female reproductive system, play a critical role in many physiological processes in both females and males. Although they are essential for the proper functioning of the body, an excess can lead to a range of health issues.
The role of estrogens in the body
Estrogens are a group of sex hormones that play a crucial role in the functioning of both female and male bodies. The main types of estrogens are estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3), with estradiol being the most biologically active. Their main functions include: development and regulation of the reproductive system, influence on mineral bone density, regulation of metabolism, especially of lipids and carbohydrates, impact on the cardiovascular system and lipid profile, regulation of brain function and mood, as well as anti-inflammatory effects and impact on the immune system. Estrogens are not only essential for reproduction, but also for overall health and well-being. Both an excess and a deficiency of estrogens can lead to serious health problems, hence monitoring and maintaining the proper level is crucial for preserving health (K.J. Hamilton et al., 2017).
