In addition, it is worth mentioning that almost 9% of teenagers suffer from hypertension. So it can be assumed that it is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases in our society.
Arterial hypertension: Definition, classification, and pathophysiological mechanisms of cardiovascular disease
Arterial hypertension, medically referred to as *hypertension*, represents one of the most prevalent disorders of the cardiovascular system, affecting a substantial proportion of the global population. This condition is broadly categorized into two distinct forms: **primary (essential) hypertension**, accounting for approximately 90% of all cases, and **secondary hypertension**, which constitutes the remaining 10% and arises as a consequence of underlying medical conditions. The etiology of primary hypertension remains a subject of ongoing scientific investigation, though prevailing hypotheses emphasize a **multifactorial origin**, including **genetic predispositions**, **elevated peripheral vascular resistance** (which necessitates increased cardiac output), and **renal regulatory dysfunctions**—given the kidneys' pivotal role in maintaining sodium-water balance. An alternative theoretical framework suggests that genetically determined hypertension may stem from **chronic overactivity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS)**, compelling the kidneys to compensate with heightened effort to stabilize electrolyte concentrations. In contrast, **secondary hypertension** manifests as a comorbid symptom associated with other pathological states, such as: **renal diseases** (e.g., glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease), **endocrine disorders** (e.g., primary hyperaldosteronism, Cushing’s syndrome), **neurological conditions** (e.g., brain tumors, spinal cord injuries), or **cardiovascular anomalies** (e.g., coarctation of the aorta). Additionally, **exogenous factors** contribute to elevated blood pressure, including: **chronic psychological stress**, **sedentary lifestyle**, **pregnancy** (preeclampsia), **pharmacotherapy** (particularly corticosteroids, sympathomimetics, or oral contraceptives), **visceral obesity**, and **exposure to toxic substances**—such as illicit drugs (cocaine, amphetamines), heavy metals (lead, cadmium), or excessive alcohol consumption. The most insidious aspect of arterial hypertension lies in its **asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic progression**, which delays diagnosis and amplifies the risk of complications. While the condition may remain clinically silent for years in many individuals, some patients exhibit **non-specific warning signs**, including: **persistent headaches** (often pulsatile and occipital in nature), **sleep disturbances** (insomnia or frequent awakenings), **heightened irritability**, **rapid fatigability with minimal exertion**, and **transient facial flushing**—particularly noticeable on the face, neck, and upper chest, resulting from capillary vasodilation.
