Excessive body weight is a significant predictor of the development of hypertension. It is estimated to affect nearly 800 million people worldwide, and according to research conducted in Poland, the problem of excessive body weight affects more than half of Poles. Excess weight and obesity not only contribute to the development of hypertension but can also lead to the onset of type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and hypercholesterolemia. Reducing body weight and adhering to a few nutritional recommendations can significantly reduce the risk of developing these diseases.
Understanding blood pressure: its role and physiological dynamics
Blood pressure constitutes the variable force exerted by circulating blood against the arterial walls, a phenomenon intrinsically linked to the cardiac cycle’s alternating phases of contraction and relaxation. This physiological parameter exhibits continuous fluctuation: it peaks during ventricular systole—termed systolic blood pressure (SCT)—when the heart muscle contracts with maximal vigor, and reaches its nadir during diastole (diastolic blood pressure, RCT), as the heart momentarily rests between beats. Optimal blood pressure is defined by systolic readings ranging from 120 to 129 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) paired with diastolic values between 80 and 84 mmHg. Conversely, hypertension is clinically identified when the average of at least two separate measurements, taken on distinct occasions, meets or exceeds 140 mmHg for systolic pressure or 90 mmHg for diastolic pressure, thereby signaling the potential need for ongoing surveillance and therapeutic intervention.
