The heart is an organ that pumps blood and provides the entire organism with oxygen and nutrients. Its proper functioning is essential for daily activity. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Poland and many countries around the world, so it is worth taking care of the proper functioning of the heart at an early age – among other things through proper nutrition.
How dietary alterations impact heart function
Proper heart function is closely linked to the functioning of the entire cardiovascular system.. If the disease affects the peripheral circulatory system, such as atherosclerotic vessels, the heart may also suffer from it.. Atherosclerosis is a disease that involves the blockage of the blood vessels by the platelet composition of complex muscle tissue, among other things, which can lead to a heart attack and even death.. Another disease burdening the heart is hypertension.. When blood exerts pressure on the arterial vessels, the heart must work harder to maintain constant blood circulation.. The risk of developing atherosclerosis and hypertension largely depends on the diet.. Western diet, based on high-calorie processed products, containing large amounts of saturated fatty acids, simple sugars and salt, exacerbates this risk.. Consuming fast food, sweets, fried red meats (beef, pork) and processed meat products (sausages, cold cuts, sausages) adversely affects heart function, as these products are a source of saturated fatty acids, salt and cholesterol.. On the other hand, the risk of cardiovascular diseases is reduced by the Mediterranean diet, which is considered the healthiest diet in the world.. It is mainly based on plant products - vegetables and fruits, whole grain cereal products, legume seeds, nuts and seeds, vegetable oils - and a small addition of lean animal products: dairy, eggs, meats and fish.. It is a source of many vitamins and minerals, dietary fiber and unsaturated fatty acids that support proper heart function.
