Colostrum
Colostrum, also known as bovine colostrum or first milk, is secreted by mammalian mammary glands during the final stages of pregnancy and the initial days following birth. It exhibits a distinct golden color, thicker consistency, and a slightly acidic pH (approx. 6.4). Its nutritional and immunological density is far superior to mature milk, containing approximately 60% protein in its dry mass (with 80% composed of valuable whey proteins and 19 essential amino acids). Key bioactive components include immunoglobulins (predominantly IgG), iron-binding lactoferrin, proline-rich polypeptides (PRP / colostrinin), lysozyme, lactalbumin, natural growth factors (IGF-1, IGF-2, TGF-β, EGF), essential vitamins (A, B-complex, C, E), and bioavailable minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc.
The properties of colostrum
Bovine colostrum possesses extensive clinically documented properties:
• Immunomodulatory – through proline-rich polypeptides (colostrinin / PRP), which regulate immune balance, stimulate humoral immunity, and support cellular defense.
• Anti-allergic – helps normalize IgE antibody levels and alleviates excessive respiratory mucus secretion during seasonal allergies.
• Antibacterial and antiviral – lactoferrin binds free iron required by pathogens, while lysozyme breaks down bacterial cell walls; lactoferrin additionally blocks viral receptors.
• Antifungal and mucosal support – inhibits Candida albicans proliferation and protects epithelial linings.
• Tissue regeneration – epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factors accelerate collagen synthesis, wound healing, and muscle repair.
• Gut barrier protection – reinforces intestinal tight junctions, mitigates leaky gut permeability, and nurtures healthy gut microbiota.
• Athletic performance – dampens intense exercise-induced muscular microtrauma and helps prevent upper respiratory tract infections in athletes.
Colostrum - side effects
On the basis of scientific research and observations so far, we can say that colostrum, as a 100% natural substance that enables the survival and development of the offspring, is highly safe to use and should have numerous health benefits. The multi-directional nature of colostum makes it a powerful tool to support the body's immunity and regeneration. Unfortunately, the action of sulphur is often considered based on the individual compounds it contains, but also on the effect that it exhibits all the ingredients contained in the first milk, which may be far more complex than its known source.
Colostrum is an opinion
Many people report a significant improvement in well-being and energy after using colostrum. Those who have a problem with the digestive system also observe significant improvements in functioning at various parts of it. Immunity and physical endurance can be observed. Most opinions are positive, however, skeptics indicate that colostrus, which has a high biological value is naturally consumed by calves and humans, as any other species should not use it. Similar objections occur in relation to regular cow's milk, which is consumed on a daily basis by the majority of the population.
Colostrum is the price
The market is full of supplements containing colostrum Unfortunately, some of them are of very poor quality. Although the capsule form is the most convenient to use, it should be remembered that the young in this form had to be highly processed, thus losing a significant part of the bioactive ingredients. The best form of the supplement seems to be liquid colostrus. However, it costs about PLN 100120 per 125 ml, which at the recommended intake (20 ml per day) is quite high. It certainly comes in combination with the quality and effectiveness of the product. Colostrum is a unique medicinal product. It is difficult to find a second, fully natural form with such a high degree of bioavailability.
