Addiction is a serious issue in society, causing numerous problems for both the addict and their surroundings. For many years, it has been primarily associated with substances such as alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing discussion about behavioral addictions, such as gambling, shopping, and also the use of phones and computers. Recently, some experts have pointed to the possibility of food addiction, specifically sugar. Opinions on the actuality of this phenomenon are divided, so it is worth thoroughly examining the available information to determine whether or not sugar consumption can lead to addiction.
The neurobiological and environmental underpinnings of addiction: a theoretical framework
In accordance with the World Health Organization’s definition, addiction represents a multifaceted psychological and physiological condition that emerges as a consequence of repeated exposure to specific substances or behaviors. This process is characterized by profound alterations in the functioning of the brain’s motivational and reward systems, leading to a compensatory drive to replicate pleasurable experiences or alleviate discomfort associated with withdrawal. The prevailing explanatory framework for the development of addictive disorders remains the biological model, which emphasizes the pivotal role of disruptions in the synthesis and regulation of neurotransmitters—most notably dopamine, colloquially referred to as the "feel-good hormone." Excessive stimulation of dopaminergic receptors by psychoactive substances induces a euphoric state that the organism encodes as highly desirable, thereby initiating a cycle of positive reinforcement. Over time, however, adaptive exhaustion of the brain’s natural reward mechanisms occurs, necessitating a gradual escalation in both dosage and frequency of exposure to achieve effects comparable to the initial experience (Wise & Robble, 2020). It is crucial to note, however, that susceptibility to addiction exhibits substantial interindividual variability—not all users of psychoactive substances develop dependence, a phenomenon attributable to the interplay of multiple determinants. Key risk factors include, but are not limited to, adverse socioeconomic conditions, deficiencies in social support networks, impairments in emotional regulation, diminished self-esteem, and chronic sensations of internal emptiness or lack of purpose (Morales et al., 2020).
