Table salt constitutes a chemical compound formed by the union of two indispensable mineral elements for human health: sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl), which together create the structure denoted as NaCl, commonly referred to as sodium chloride. Particular emphasis should be placed on sodium, as it plays a pivotal role in maintaining the body’s hydroelectrolytic equilibrium. Additionally, this element governs acid-base balance, participates in neuromuscular functions, and facilitates the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach—a critical component of digestion. Sodium homeostasis is tightly regulated by its concentration: excess triggers increased renal excretion, whereas deficiency results in tissue retention. Given that salt represents the primary dietary source of sodium, their intake should be evaluated collectively. It is important to note that 1 gram of sodium corresponds to 2.5 grams of salt, while 1 gram of salt provides only 0.4 grams of sodium—a distinction of paramount importance in designing a balanced nutritional regimen.
