Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): an overview of etiology, prevalence, and clinical manifestations
A multifaceted endocrine disorder with a complex pathophysiology that, according to epidemiological research, affects approximately eight to twelve percent of women during their reproductive years. Primary clinical features include irregular or absent menstrual cycles, impaired fertility, dermatological manifestations such as acne vulgaris or rosacea, and metabolic dysregulation—most notably insulin resistance. A subset of patients also exhibits lipid profile abnormalities, including elevated triglyceride levels and reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
