Organic products are food products that are produced in environmentally-focused farms using special environmentally and animal-friendly farming techniques. All food products sold as "organic" are subject to specific norms and must meet numerous legal criteria.
Principles of organic agriculture
Organic farmers are strictly limited in their use of pesticides. Instead of relying on chemical agents, they should cultivate nutrient-rich soils to promote the vigorous growth of healthy crops. It is also crucial to raise animals in free-range conditions, which helps in better monitoring of pests and diseases. Central to the system is the welfare of farm animals. The use of synthetic chemical fertilizers is prohibited. Farmers producing organic goods must avoid using artificial fertilizers on their lands. Soils must be maintained through cultivation, the addition of organic matter such as manure and compost, and crop rotation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are banned. Organic practices encompass not only agricultural techniques but also production and packaging methods. Production processes are strictly monitored to protect products from contamination, such as chemicals, and to ensure proper execution of the production cycle. Excessive use of antibiotics and medications in farming is prohibited. Instead, farmers should adopt preventive measures, such as grazing animals on pastures and maintaining small herds. Organic and local food. While many stores offer organic products, these are often imported from abroad, where ecological standards may be less stringent. The best solution is to purchase products directly from local producers, whom you can ask about their practices. Increasingly popular is the trend of buying food from small producers, which can be termed the „new organic trend“. Such products are tastier, fresher, and more nutritious. By purchasing from local suppliers, we have greater assurance of their safety and health benefits, and we support the local economy. Some organic products from large retail chains may differ in quality from those bought from local producers. Unfortunately, some farmers practicing organic methods cannot afford to obtain organic certification. Therefore, it is worth visiting the local market and asking small producers about their farming practices.
