The systolic reading (upper number) reflects the peak pressure generated during cardiac contraction, whereas the diastolic reading (lower number) indicates the baseline pressure maintained during ventricular relaxation. In healthy adults, the reference standard is established at 120/80 mmHg; however, these parameters exhibit age-related variability. For infants up to 12 months of age, normative ranges are derived from percentile charts—for instance, median values (50th percentile) in males register at 103/56 mmHg, while the 75th percentile reaches 104/58 mmHg. Females demonstrate marginally higher metrics: 104/58 mmHg (50th percentile) and 105/59 mmHg (75th percentile). In older children, blood pressure gradually increases, with typical values fluctuating between 111–115/74–75 mmHg. Deviations from these norms—whether hypertensive or hypotensive—pose significant health risks, particularly among elderly individuals, those with obesity or overweight, sedentary lifestyles, or nutritionally deficient diets.
