In the face of modern lifestyle, stress, and environmental pollution, as well as the properties of antibiotic therapy and consumption of high-sugar processed foods, our immunity may be reduced, leading to an overgrowth of fungi in the body, starting from the gut to internal organs and skin.
Candida albicans: A commensal yeast with pathogenic potential in the human gastrointestinal system
Candida albicans, commonly referred to as the opportunistic yeast, constitutes a ubiquitous fungal organism that, under physiological conditions, resides as a commensal component of the human gastrointestinal microbiota—primarily within the lower segments of the digestive tract. In this symbiotic state, it fulfills a critical metabolic function by facilitating the enzymatic degradation of complex carbohydrates and simple sugars. While its presence in controlled quantities poses no threat to systemic homeostasis—owing to regulatory mechanisms exerted by the immune system and competitive interactions with coexisting microorganisms—the situation becomes clinically significant when unchecked proliferation occurs, a condition termed candidiasis. This pathological overgrowth is exacerbated by exogenous factors, including environmental pollution, the indiscriminate use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, chronic oxidative stress, diets rich in ultra-processed and nutrient-deficient foods, and excessive alcohol consumption. The consequence is a compromise of intestinal barrier integrity, enabling the pathogen’s dissemination beyond its original niche. Under these circumstances, Candida albicans undergoes a morphological transition: shifting from its benign yeast form to an invasive hyphal state characterized by resistance to conventional antifungal agents and antibiotics. Via the circulatory system, the fungus subsequently colonizes tissues offering optimal thermal and humidity conditions—such as the oral mucosa, the urogenital tract, and cutaneous surfaces. It is imperative to note that while this microorganism is omnipresent in natural environments, its pathogenic potential is realized solely in the context of impaired host immune defenses, thereby classifying it as an opportunistic pathogen of substantial medical concern.
