Trametes versicolor – a reservoir of bioactive compounds
Scientific research confirms that Trametes versicolor serves as a source of numerous compounds with diverse therapeutic properties. These primarily include protein-polysaccharide and polysaccharide complexes (glucans, α-glucans, β-glucans), as well as terpenes and polyphenolic compounds. In 2012, Japanese researchers isolated ternatin (a cyclic heptapeptide) from this fungus, which may be applied in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Additionally, the fungus contains mineral compounds (e.g., manganese, copper, nickel), fatty acids (saturated and unsaturated), simple sugars (e.g., xylose, mannose, rhamnose, glucose, arabinose, galactose), B vitamins, ergosterols, tetraol, glycoproteins, cerevisterols, sistosterols, triterpenoids, glucuronic acid, and phenolic acids (e.g., caffeic acid, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid). The fruiting bodies of this fungus also synthesize various enzymes (e.g., β-glucosidases, manganese peroxidase, cellobiase hydrolases, endoglucanases), hemicellulose, and volatile compounds, particularly from the sesquiterpene group (e.g., isoledene, β-guaiene, δ-cadinene).
