Its etiologic underpinnings are diverse, with one frequently overlooked yet critical factor being gastrointestinal dysfunction, particularly disruptions in gut microbial equilibrium. The gut microbiota constitutes a sophisticated ecosystem comprising trillions of commensal microorganisms, including bacteria (*e.g.*, *Firmicutes*, *Bacteroidetes*), archaea, viruses (bacteriophages), and yeast-like fungi. Its functions extend far beyond basic digestion: these microbes actively participate in nutrient metabolism, vitamin synthesis (such as K and B12), immune response regulation, and the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)—butyrate, propionate, and acetate—which exert pleiotropic anti-inflammatory effects and modulate intestinal motility. Moreover, the gut serves as the body’s largest immunological organ due to the presence of gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), which engages in continuous crosstalk with the microbiota—mediated by antigen-presenting cells (e.g., dendritic cells) and pattern recognition receptors (PRRs)—to shape immunological tolerance and respond to pathogens. This dynamic interplay between the microbiota and immune system has direct implications for skin health, as the skin-associated lymphoid tissue (SALT) functions as a localized immunological barrier against external threats, including pathogens and mechanical injuries.
