However, the demands of contemporary life—marked by accelerated pace, chronic stress, and irregular work schedules—frequently disrupt these natural mechanisms. It has become increasingly uncommon for individuals to align their circadian rhythms with the natural day-night cycle, such as retiring at dusk and rising with the sun. While some attribute their late-night activity or early bedtime to genetic predispositions (e.g., identifying as "night owls" or "early birds"), the reality is that most deviations from the natural rhythm stem from environmental factors, pathological conditions (e.g., thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalances), or specific biological phases (e.g., pregnancy, aging). Even a few consecutive nights of insufficient sleep can permanently destabilize the internal clock, and reestablishing its synchronization demands significantly greater effort and self-discipline—hence, many individuals persist with unhealthy, artificially imposed habits.
The most prevalent disruptors of effective sleep include chronic stress, unresolved emotional concerns, excessive workload, consumption of heavy meals shortly before bedtime, overuse of caffeine, alcohol, or other stimulants, as well as underlying medical conditions (e.g., depression, cardiovascular diseases). These factors can either prevent the onset of sleep or result in shallow, non-restorative sleep—even when the total duration meets the recommended 8–9 hours. Therefore, it is essential to implement deliberate strategies that support the body’s natural processes, such as optimizing the bedroom environment to enhance melatonin production—the hormone critical for regulating sleep-wake cycles. Key recommendations include: removing electronic devices from the sleep area or positioning them out of sight, placing mobile phones at a considerable distance from the bed and powering them off overnight, blocking external light sources (e.g., with blackout curtains or blinds), avoiding harsh or overstimulating wall colors, ventilating the room before sleep (where external conditions permit), and timing the last meal appropriately—a light dinner should be consumed no later than one hour before bedtime, whereas a heavy meal should be finished 2–3 hours prior.
