Paranüsse, wissenschaftlich als *Bertholletia excelsa* klassifiziert, sind die Samen eines majestätischen Baumes, der im Volksmund oft als "Paranussbaum" bezeichnet wird. Seine markanten, holzigen Früchte beherbergen im Inneren die wertvollen Samen, die – obwohl umgangssprachlich als "Nüsse" bezeichnet – botanisch gesehen eigentlich Kerne darstellen. Dieser Baum gedeiht vornehmlich in den feuchten Regenwäldern des Amazonasbeckens, wo er einen unverzichtbaren Bestandteil des Ökosystems bildet. In Brasilien tragen diese einzigartigen Samen aufgrund ihres außergewöhnlichen Nährstoffgehalts und ihrer wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung den Beinamen "brasilianisches Gold", wobei das Nachbarland Bolivien mit Abstand der größte Exporteur ist und der Anbau sowie Handel dort eine zentrale Rolle für die lokale Wirtschaft spielt.
