Heart-strengthening diet - for whom is it suggested?

A perpetually heart-supporting diet is recommended for all individuals, especially those belonging to the high-risk group for lipid profile disorders, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.

Nourishment is the foundation of prevention

The manner of nourishment possesses a significant impact on the most critical risk factors for heart diseases - body weight, blood pressure, blood sugar level, and lipid profile. In a heart-healthy diet, it is key to adhere to the following principles.

Substituting saturated fatty acids with unsaturated ones

According to contemporary expert opinions (Astrup A. et al. from 2010), swapping saturated fatty acids for unsaturated ones can decrease the risk of heart disease. Saturated fatty acids, which don't have double bonds in their structure, are mainly present in animal products. It is suspected that their consumption has a negative impact on the lipid profile, including the LDL cholesterol level. It is questioned whether dietary cholesterol directly affects blood cholesterol levels, but by limiting the intake of saturated fatty acids, we can reduce cholesterol intake. Products with the highest content of these fatty acids include: fatty meats, lard, bacon, offal, fast food, fatty cheeses. A similar effect on health have trans fats, i.e. unsaturated fatty acids whose configuration has been modified. These can be found in hard cheese and bakery products. How to limit the intake of animal fats? Break the routine. Instead of limiting yourself to a traditional sandwich with cold cuts or cheese, add something new to your diet - vegetable pastes (e.g. hummus, broccoli paste, carrot paste), curd cheeses in various versions - with fruits or salty. It is not recommended to completely eliminate cold cuts or cheeses, but it's worth choosing varieties with lower fat content. The key to maintaining balance is variety in the diet, i.e. the alternating use of different accompaniments.

It's not as it seems

Limiting sodium intake affects blood pressure, particularly in people with hypertension. To decrease salt in the diet, one should avoid processed foods. Most salt is consumed in the form of fast food, canned foods, chips, and other salty snacks. The solution is to use natural products. Here are some recommendations: - prepare meat dishes and cut them into slices instead of buying processed meats, - prepare healthier versions of salty snacks, such as garden chips or homemade potato chips instead of chips and salt sticks, - replace salty nuts with natural nuts or dried fruits, - avoid processed foods, such as soup powders and canned goods, - increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables, which are the main source of potassium, an element that positively affects blood pressure.

Increased intake of dietary components rich in fiber

Research conducted by Zhang Z. and associates suggests that consuming dietary fiber can help prevent coronary artery disease or stroke. Ensuring an adequate intake of fiber in the diet is very simple. Here are a few simple tips: – replace white bread with whole grain or graham bread, – consume five portions of vegetables daily, – include buckwheat, millet, brown rice, and cereal flakes such as oats, rye, and bran in your diet at least three times a week.

Incorporation of nuts in the diet

Research by Luo C. et al. indicates that a daily intake of 30 g of nuts reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 30%. However, this does not include salted, caramelized, or breaded nuts. A sensible diet plan should be based on the following product groups: whole grain products, low-fat dairy products, fish and lean meat, nuts and legumes, vegetables and fruits, plant oils. This dietary approach ensures that the diet is rich in nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, while limiting calorie intake. Processed foods have high energy density but low nutritional value. They have many calories and do not provide valuable nutrients. To choose the right products, it is necessary to read food labels. The table of nutritional values provides the actual content of sodium and added sugars in the product. If sugar is listed first, the product should be avoided. Beverages, especially fruit juices, are also a pitfall. They are associated with vitamins, but in reality, they contain a lot of easily digestible sugars. Fruit juice consumption should be limited to 200 g per day. The optimal complement to a sensible diet plan is physical activity, which cannot be overlooked in the context of heart disease prevention.

Practicing active physical activity

Consistent and active physical exercise helps to reduce the risk of heart diseases and increases the chance of a longer and healthier life. This applies to both healthy individuals and cardiology patients across a wide range of ages. How should we move? Adults are advised to engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week (or 75 minutes of intensive oxygen consumption) to increase its effectiveness, but to strengthen this efficiency, the exercise time can be extended to up to 300 minutes per week. However, the most important thing is that the chosen forms of movement bring us pleasure and satisfaction. Therefore, one can consider one's own preferences and possibilities and use different types of movement to avoid monotony and maintain a high level of motivation. The best-documented health effects are achieved through oxygen consumption (e.g., fast walking, running, swimming, cycling). However, even a balanced diet and physical activity will not bring the expected results if they are overshadowed by the shadow of tobacco smoke. Active smoking significantly increases the risk of heart and circulatory diseases. But not only active smoking has such consequences. Passive smoking should also be avoided, as smoking by a partner or at the workplace can increase the risk of heart and circulatory diseases by up to 30%. Stopping smoking in a short time can reverse or slow down some of the negative effects. These include, for example, disturbances of the vascular endothelium, inflammation, disturbances of platelet function and fat oxidation. Changes in lifestyle are crucial for the prevention of heart diseases. In general, gradual measures are more effective than abrupt changes. Everyone should choose their own method of introducing healthy habits.
