Key Takeaways
Over the span of a day, hundreds of thousands of cells are exchanged in the human body... Old, depleted, or damaged cells are replaced with new ones... It is evident that severed tendons do not regenerate on their own, and when a herniated disc occurs, it necessitates a prolonged rehabilitation process... The human body can be subjected to immense overloads, and the fact that it has a high tolerance threshold does not imply the necessity of its excessive utilization... Are there specific reasons behind disturbances in movement and how can one prevent them?

From what source do motor function disorders originate

The following factors can cause motor function disorders: - pathologies that do not affect us (different types of congenital diseases); - accidents caused by chance (all kinds of traffic accidents, falls from great heights, etc.); - overloads due to movement restrictions (exercising outside the correct range of motion); - absence of a closed circuit (exercising with incorrect technique, in an inappropriate position); - adaptive errors (lack of adequate rest, unbalanced diet, no warm-up).. We have practically no influence on the first two points (a, b).. No one can predict whether we will collide with a car on the way to work or tear a ligament while playing basketball.. Similarly, we have no significant influence on which diseases will be passed on to us in our genes.. Fortunately, the first two points account for no more than 4% of all causes of dysfunction that can be found in gyms.. We have a much greater influence on the next two points (c, d).. It is a matter of working on proper technique and mobilizing movement-restricted structures.. We also have a great influence on the last point (e), but committing these errors does not significantly affect the development of motor function disorders.

Initial cause: ailments beyond control

Ailments that are beyond control constitute no more than 2% of the reasons for motor disorders. It is uncommon to encounter individuals with inherited anatomical anomalies in the gym. Some of them (scoliosis, deep lordosis) can undoubtedly be rectified to a degree that allows for training without difficulty. Others (knock-knees or bow-legs) pose a greater challenge in rectifying the defect, adjusting to the suitable training regimen, and decelerating the progression of the issue. The rare cause of problems is a deficiency in bone or joint structures, which results in the malfunctioning of the motor system.

Second cause: accidental injuries caused by random occurrences

It pertains to substantial muscle damage resulting from random occurrences, such as any injuries sustained during physical activity, falls from heights, road accidents... medicine has made significant strides in treating such injuries, rebuilding and improving joint function... which signifies that there are very few accidental injuries caused by random occurrences in the present day that cannot be cured to the extent that physical activity can be resumed.

Third cause: overloads induced by movement constraints

It's easy to find someone in the gym complaining about any kind of pain. Usually, the person complaining about knee pain thinks that the cause is directly in this joint. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that there are any pathologies in that area. Knee pain can also be caused by constriction of the surrounding muscles, problems with pelvic alignment, spinal curvature, or other issues. Therefore, it's not surprising that you may experience pain that can turn into an injury over time if you don't take care of proper joint mobility and the elimination of stiffness. Performing exercises with stiffness prevents you from assuming the correct position and limits your range of motion during exercise. Therefore, it's important to regularly take care of adequate mobility and the elimination of stiffness, both on an amateur and professional level, to reduce the risk of pain or injury.

Fourth reason: absence of a closed circuit

The human body is a complex mechanism composed of various types of tissues. The condition for smooth and efficient operation of this system is to put it in a physiological, stable position. You should remember that every movement in all exercises is initiated by the tension of the body. Ideally, any exercise would be started with a closed circuit, i.e. the braces of the spine and the hips, with the shoulders fixed and the legs fixed in parallel. However, it is possible to generate muscular force without fully satisfying this condition, just like driving a car with faulty engine oil or a punctured tire. You can continue to move, but with a greater risk of damage. Lack of a closed circuit can cause loss of power and strength, leading to herniated discs. There is also a risk of injury if someone with limited mobility in the hips attempts a full squat. The absence of a closed circuit arises due to: elbows led too far from the body, feet turned inward or outward, deepened (or sometimes flattened) lordosis of the spine, shoulders pushed forward (lack of stabilization), curved spine, neck stretching, or excessive lowering of the head.

The fifth cause: adaptive errors

Adaptive errors do not contribute to motor dysfunction to the same extent as the absence of a closed circuit. However, the same principle applies to them - long-term repetition of these errors also accumulates and will eventually manifest itself. The most common adaptive errors are: - frequent sleep deprivation; - inadequate nutrition; - stress; - improper hydration of the body; - lack of warm-up; - prolonged stay in an unnatural position. Not everyone manages to take care of each of these elements. But why is it worth taking care of them? A 3% dehydration of the body results in a decrease in performance capacity by 10-15%. Sleep deprivation is associated with an increased level of blood sugar, which in the long term may result in glycemic disorders. In turn, excessive stress raises the level of cortisol, which effectively prevents the post-workout adaptation process necessary to increase performance parameters.

Summary

The most common causes of motor dysfunction are the absence of a closed circuit and the loads caused by movement constraints. The lack of a closed circuit may occur, for instance, when we perform a dead row with a bent back or when we press on a bench with our shoulders released forward, which is when we do exercises without stabilizing the body. However, loads caused by movement constraints are caused by, among other things, contractures or congenital, weak joint mobility, which makes it difficult to adopt a normal or stable posture. A slightly lesser influence on the occurrence of adaptive errors are adaptive errors themselves, although their repetition may ultimately affect the body. The most common adaptive errors include stress, insufficient sleep duration, and lack of warm-up. Genetic diseases and accidental accidents, such as traffic accidents or falls from a height, may also contribute to motor dysfunction.
