Calories in the diet have long been considered a key factor in weight control, but we often overlook their true meaning. Energy is essential for the proper functioning of the body, but even more important is the load they carry.
Cellular energy – the key to bodily function
Calories are the fundamental unit of energy required by the body for repair, regeneration, movement, respiration, gut peristalsis, hormone production, and numerous other processes. They originate from macronutrients supplied through food. One gram of protein and one gram of carbohydrates each provide approximately 4 kcal, while one gram of fat yields 9 kcal. Consequently, fats are considered highly caloric nutrients, though they are less efficiently utilized by the body compared to carbohydrates. Understanding the role and balance of different macronutrients in the diet allows for better metabolic regulation. Proteins serve as building blocks, carbohydrates provide quick energy, and fats support cellular regeneration. For instance, glucose from carbohydrates is transported to muscle cells, where it is converted into energy. Consuming 20 g of fat provides 180 kcal, which can be used for heat generation, maintaining vital functions, or producing mechanical energy. Calories are essential for most cells. In cases of calorie deficiency, the body enters a conservation mode to protect critical life-sustaining processes like respiration and circulation, often leading to hormonal imbalances, slowed gut motility, mental health issues, or reduced heart function. Prolonged restrictive diets with low caloric intake can deplete the body.
