The present lifestyle of most individuals is dominated by extended periods of sitting, which may result in spinal pain. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), back pain is one of the most widespread conditions globally, with the primary causes being insufficient physical activity and poor posture. Therefore, it is essential to care for the spine, which contributes to maintaining physical fitness and preventing pain, thereby enhancing the quality of life.
Structure and functions of the spine
The spine is the fundamental element of the skeletal system, responsible for maintaining body posture and enabling movement. It plays a significant role as a support structure, enabling movement and protecting the spinal cord from injuries. The spine can be divided into four sections: the neck, the thorax, the lumbar region, the sacrum, and the coccyx. Each section consists of vertebrae that are connected by intervertebral discs and joints, allowing the spine to bend and twist. The spine is surrounded by deep muscles that have a stabilizing function, including back muscles, abdominal muscles, multisegmental muscles, and superficial muscles such as the latissimus dorsi and the quadratus muscle.
