This is possible because virtually everyone spends a significant portion of their day in a seated position, with the time spent in this position becoming increasingly longer.
The pervasive sedentary existence: Physiological and health ramifications of prolonged seated postures in modern societies
The phenomenon of physical inactivity and the predominance of seated postures now affects virtually every inhabitant of advanced and highly industrialized nations. In Poland, this lifestyle has evolved into a cultural norm—sitting has become not only an occupational necessity but also the preferred method of leisure and relaxation. In public transportation such as trams and buses, there is even competition for seating, particularly among younger generations, while in front of screens—whether computers or televisions—individuals spend several to as many as a dozen hours daily, often continuously and without interruptions for movement or posture changes. Another critical factor exacerbating this trend is the nature of modern employment, especially in office-based roles, where prolonged sitting has become standard practice. What are the immediate and long-term consequences? Among the most common and severe health effects are chronic spinal pain, progressive degenerative disc disease, microcirculatory disturbances leading to cellulite formation, and localized fat deposition—particularly in the gluteal and thigh regions. Additionally, there is an elevated risk of developing varicose veins in the lower extremities, systemic circulatory disorders, and even cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarctions. Are these prospects not alarming? Epidemiological research suggests that prolonged sitting may exert an even more destructive impact on the body than tobacco smoking—with the critical distinction that smoking can be abandoned, whereas avoiding sitting in the context of modern life is nearly impossible. It is essential to recognize that this sedentary model of activity is fundamentally misaligned with *Homo sapiens* biology. Our ancestors adopted a seated position exclusively in situations of absolute necessity: during meals, or when weakened by injury, illness, or advanced age. The reference to evolutionary context here is not arbitrary—despite civilizational progress, the core physiological mechanisms of humans have remained largely unchanged. Our digestive, circulatory, and nervous systems operate on the same principles as they did thousands of years ago, as does our skeletal structure, which is adapted for dynamic movement rather than static loading. For instance, the physiological lumbar lordosis of the spine evolved to absorb stresses during walking, running, or lifting—not to sustain the body in a seated position for extended periods. In pregnant women, an additional hyperlordosis develops, naturally redistributing forces acting on the spine, which underscores how inherently our bodies are designed for motion, not stagnation. These observations prompt reflection on diet and lifestyle—it is no coincidence that many contemporary dietary guidelines draw inspiration from pre-industrial eating patterns, when physical activity was an integral part of daily existence.
