Tribulus terrestris, commonly referred to as puncture vine or caltrop, is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Zygophyllaceae family, which encompasses approximately twenty distinct species. Its growth habit bears a superficial resemblance to grapevines, typically attaining heights ranging from ten to sixty centimeters. During the flowering period, the plant produces yellow inflorescences, subsequently yielding its signature fruits—star-shaped and somewhat spherical in form, visually akin to miniature coconuts. The fruit’s exterior exhibits a vivid yellow-green hue, while in its native Asian contexts, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is recognized by regional appellations such as "Chih-hsing" or "Cecodia." Organoleptically, the fruits are characterized by a pronounced bitterness complemented by a robust aromatic profile, whereas the root system displays a color spectrum from pale yellow to light brown, accompanied by a mildly sweet taste and an equally potent fragrance. Both the fruits and roots are harnessed for their medicinal properties.

Geographically, puncture vine is indigenous to the Khorasan region of northern Iran, though its distribution spans Mediterranean, subtropical, and desert ecosystems globally. For centuries, it has been integral to Chinese herbal medicine, where it is employed to address a diverse array of ailments—ranging from mood disorders such as depression to sexual health concerns (including diminished libido) and infertility. Its therapeutic efficacy stems from a rich phytochemical composition, featuring steroidal saponins, alkaloids, biogenic amines, and diosgenin—a phytosterol with documented effects on hormonal regulation.
