The anatomy of the calf muscles - comprehensive description
The superficial layer of the posterior muscle group of the lower leg, known as the calf, consists of three muscles: the gastrocnemius, the soleus, and the plantaris. The first two are commonly known as the triceps surae and constitute a significant portion of the muscle mass in the posterior group. The gastrocnemius muscle is a two-headed muscle, with a lateral and a medial head. It originates on the posterior surface of the femur and on the joint capsule. Below the gastrocnemius muscle is the soleus muscle, which resembles a flatfish in shape, hence its name. The origin of the soleus muscle is in the upper part of the tibia, along with its head, and on the posterior surface of the fibula. The belly of the triceps surae muscle transitions into the strong Achilles tendon, which attaches to the calcaneus. The calf muscles are powerful plantar flexors of the foot and partial flexors of the knee joint. Due to their functions, they are involved in walking, running, and jumping. Each muscle that forms the calf differs in terms of morphology and structure, which means that the functions of the individual muscles will be slightly different. For example, the soleus muscle will be more involved in maintaining a standing position than the gastrocnemius muscle.
