Yerba Mate: Properties and Effects

Yerba mate is derived from the evergreen Paraguayan holly tree, which grows naturally in South America, particularly in Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Brazil. The leaves of this plant contain theobromine (a stimulant found in chocolate) and theophylline (a stimulant present in green tea), along with a complex of vitamins, amino acids, minerals (magnesium, potassium, zinc, chromium), and antioxidants in significantly higher quantities than some green teas. Regular consumption of yerba mate infusion can enhance cardiovascular performance, support metabolism, and prevent lactic acid buildup in muscles. Many yerba mate varieties are rich in potassium, which regulates water balance and maintains a steady heart rhythm. Additionally, the average dry mass of the leaves contains 0.7 to 2% caffeine, comparable to coffee (1–2.5%). Yerba mate has a diuretic effect, aids in body detoxification, and possesses strong antioxidant properties confirmed in numerous studies. It stimulates the nervous system, improves concentration and liver function, and reduces cholesterol deposition in blood vessels by counteracting LDL oxidation. It also protects against diabetes complications. However, excessive yerba mate consumption may be linked to the accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the body, including carcinogenic benzopyrenes. Research has identified at least 15 PAH compounds in various yerba mate varieties.

Guarana – properties and effects

Guarana is a plant native to the Amazon basin. It has a stimulating effect and helps combat both physical and mental fatigue. Its rich composition, including guarana, alkaloids, theobromine, theophylline, adenine, terpenes, tannins, starch, fats, flavonoids, and saponins, enhances concentration and memory. Known as a natural stimulant and energy source, its cosmetic properties stem from the same compounds that aid the body in coping with exertion. Additionally, guarana can mitigate the adverse effects of caffeine on the circulatory system while enhancing the anti-inflammatory action of substances in the body.

Effects of caffeine present in coffee on the body

Coffee, known for millennia, originated in Africa. Arabs began consuming it in the 11th century. The first coffeehouse was established in Vienna, founded by the Pole Jerzy Kulczyński. In Poland, the first coffeehouse opened in Warsaw in 1724. Caffeine in coffee accelerates heart rate, temporarily raises blood pressure, dilates airways, and improves oxygenation. It blocks sleep receptors, reducing fatigue, and enhances cerebral circulation, boosting concentration. Additionally, it has anti-allergic effects by inhibiting histamine release. Regular coffee consumption lowers Parkinson's risk and stimulates brain vessels, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to nerve cells. Harvard researchers confirm that high coffee intake reduces prostate cancer risk by 20% and prevents type 2 diabetes. However, instant coffee lacks natural benefits due to chemical processing and should be avoided. People with hypertension, arrhythmia, reflux, glaucoma, ulcers, or gastritis should avoid coffee. It is also inadvisable for those with nervous, emotional, or mental disorders, as well as pregnant women. Caffeine depletes calcium and magnesium, but moderate intake (1-3 cups daily) is harmless, especially with milk or cream added.

Is it genuinely tea, yerba mate, guarana tea, or coffee – which choice is optimal?

Should regular coffee consumption fail to yield desired benefits, instead resulting in excessive stimulation and challenges with focus or sleep, exploring alternative caffeine sources may be advisable.
