Among the many challenges facing society today, one of the significant ones is healthy nutrition. In Poland, as in many other regions of the world, unhealthy dietary choices are not an exception, but rather the norm. Excessive inclination towards consuming fast food, sweets, or processed snacks leads to often neglecting the basics of a healthy diet. The pandemic has further contributed to the unhealthy dietary habits of Poles, which are not always geared towards healthy choices. How can we make better decisions for our health on a daily basis? What are the consequences of these choices for our health? What are the main pitfalls of our dietary habits?
Healthy diet, i.e. what it should be like
A Polish plate often contains a large amount of meat and spicy, high-calorie additives. However, there is a universal guide that assists in composing balanced and healthy meals. It is the concept of the so-called health plate, which promotes a sensible division of the meal into nutrients. Half the plate should contain vegetables and fruits, rich in vitamins, mineral ingredients, and fiber. They are the foundation of a good diet. A quarter of the plate should contain protein sources, which are essential for building and regenerating tissues - lean meat, fish, low-fat dairy products, legumes, or eggs. The rest of the plate should be filled with complex carbohydrates, such as whole grain products, which provide energy in the long term and support digestion. It is also necessary to add fat, preferably in the form of unsaturated fatty acids, which can be found in vegetable oils, nuts, or avocado. It is also important to adequately hydrate the body (K. Wolnicka 2020). Such a composition is not only easy to prepare, but also allows for balanced and optimal nutrition.
