Acne vulgaris – clinical characteristics and epidemiological overview
Acne vulgaris, commonly referred to as common acne, represents one of the most prevalent dermatological conditions, predominantly affecting individuals during adolescence. Initial clinical manifestations typically emerge between the ages of 11 and 13, with approximately 15% of patients experiencing a severe form of the disease characterized by extensive inflammatory lesions that frequently result in permanent scarring. The peak incidence of acne vulgaris occurs between 14 and 17 years of age; however, the duration of skin lesions is highly variable and difficult to predict—while most cases resolve within 2–3 years, there are documented instances where inflammatory processes persisted for up to a decade. Although the condition is most common among younger populations, it is not exclusively limited to adolescence; research indicates that roughly 5% of women and 1% of men over the age of 40 continue to present with active inflammatory skin conditions (source: Szepietowski et al., 2013). Lesions primarily localize to the face and back, with less frequent occurrences on the shoulders or buttocks. Clinically, acne vulgaris is categorized into four primary subtypes: papulopustular, comedonal, phlegmonous, and cicatricial forms.
