The 21st century has brought with it many possibilities and risks. An individual is exposed to many factors that can lead to addiction, including computers and the internet. Technological addiction can have as harmful an impact on an individual as gambling, sex addiction, or work obsession.
Compulsive engagement with modern technology: societal risks and developmental consequences
Contemporary reliance on digital innovations—including internet connectivity, mobile devices, and social media platforms—presents a significant challenge, particularly for younger demographics such as preschool-aged children and adolescents. The sight of a toddler effortlessly navigating a touchscreen device or an elementary student carrying a personal smartphone in their backpack has ceased to provoke surprise, instead becoming an everyday occurrence. Moreover, the vast majority of adult users now struggle to envision daily functioning without constant access to online networks, portable computers, or smart devices—this is simply the reality of the modern era. It is crucial to recognize, however, that beyond their undeniable role in simplifying routine tasks, technologies serve two pivotal functions: they provide immediate gratification through entertainment and function as tools for interpersonal communication and relationship-building. Online platforms, messaging applications, blogs, and video-sharing services create spaces for self-expression, idea exchange with other users, and the formation of new connections—often under the perception of anonymity and security. The virtual realm may hold particular appeal for individuals facing challenges in real-world social interactions. Consequently, it is unsurprising that excessive technology use frequently manifests as compensatory behavior, substituting for young people what they lack in their home environments, educational settings, or peer groups. This poses a serious threat to their healthy development, systematically diminishing opportunities to cultivate genuine, meaningful relationships and pursue personal growth. Technological addictions often evolve into a crisis for entire families, entangled in disputes, attempts to monitor the addicted individual’s behavior, and the search for effective intervention strategies.
