As widely known, the agrest is a shrub with characteristic, green berries that occur on thorny stems. This plant is widely spread, as evidenced by its presence in Europe as well as in the northern parts of Africa and America and the Caucasus. Agrest is characterized by a specific, very original taste, oscillating between sweet and mild acidity, which divides the tastes of fruit lovers. The opponents of the agrest should, however, quickly change their approach to this plant due to its numerous health benefits. Firstly, the fruits of the agrest are rich in lutein, which belongs to the group of carotenoids, i.e., substances with antioxidant properties. Lutein is extremely beneficial for the work and condition of the eyes, hence a high supply of lutein protects against the occurrence of eye diseases such as age-related changes in the retina. Lutein is also useful for the prevention of chronic circulatory diseases. In addition, agrest contains significant amounts of magnesium and vitamins from the B group, which have a positive effect on the functioning of the nervous system. The fruits of the agrest are also an excellent source of organic acids (citric acid and malic acid) and pectins, known as dietary fibers, which means that agrest can be recommended to people with digestive problems or impaired intestinal function.
