Parasitology is the scientific discipline involved in the study of parasites, encompassing organisms that parasitize within and outside a host. Naturopathy offers us numerous solutions, depending on the type of parasite.
Herbs for the treatment of parasitic infections
Despite advancements in hygiene and medicine, children remain susceptible to parasitic infections such as scabies and lice. In cases of scabies, Peruvian balsam can be applied as a cream or suspension. Extracts from horsetail, combined with chamomile flowers, are suitable for skin cleansing. In folk medicine, sabadyl acid and the acidic tincture from kichaw are known remedies. These preparations exhibit antiparasitic effects but contain toxic alkaloids. Internal parasites, such as tapeworms and roundworms, also pose a significant threat. Pumpkin seeds are recommended, especially for children, due to their non-toxic nature. The human roundworm has a single host, and among the recommended herbs are mugwort, wormwood, and thyme. Marigold and calendula also exhibit antiparasitic properties. Garlic possesses antiparasitic effects, and the allicin it contains inhibits the growth of protozoa. Mugwort can be used to prepare a decoction helpful in treating intestinal parasites. Echinacea may also assist in treating parasitic infections, but caution is advised when administering immunosuppressive drugs. Western thuja contains thujone and can be used to produce antiparasitic preparations, though caution is necessary. Essential oils extracted from plants like oregano and dill can reduce the risk of parasitic infections. Lemon balm essential oil also demonstrates activity against parasites. Thyme is effective against giardia and worms. Extracts from celandine also exhibit antiparasitic effects. Berberine and ginger components can influence the inhibition of parasite development. Olive leaves and coriander also support the fight against intestinal parasites. In Chinese herbal medicine, the leaves of sweet flag are used to treat parasitic infections. Not only individual herbs but also their appropriately combined mixtures exhibit antiparasitic effects.
