The body's immunity is its capacity to respond to pathogens and foreign factors, as well as maintain internal balance. Thanks to immunity, we can endure in an environment full of hazards such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and maintain homeostasis, i.e., the internal balance of the body. In this process, immune mechanisms play a crucial role, enabling tissue regeneration and repair during mental and physical stress.
Defense mechanisms of the body: how the immune system operates
The immune system constitutes a sophisticated biological framework designed to respond to environmental stimuli by discriminating between harmless, potentially hazardous, toxic, and neutral agents. Its core components are specialized cells known as leukocytes—or white blood cells—whose primary function is the detection and neutralization of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and allergens. Leukocytes are categorized into three principal groups: lymphocytes, phagocytes (encompassing macrophages, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, and dendritic cells), and cytotoxic cells, which include natural killer (NK) cells. Each subtype performs distinct roles: phagocytes engulf and degrade microorganisms via digestive enzymes, whereas NK cells identify aberrant surface markers on antibody-coated cells (such as malignant or virally infected cells) and induce their destruction. These mechanisms form part of the innate (non-specific) immune response. The adaptive (specific) immunity is mediated by lymphocytes, which exist in two forms: B lymphocytes, which generate antibodies in response to foreign antigens (aided by antigen-presenting cells and helper T lymphocytes), and T lymphocytes, which either collaborate with phagocytes or directly neutralize pathogens through cytotoxic T cells. Supplementary protection is provided by mechanical barriers (e.g., coughing, sneezing, lacrimation), chemical defenses (antimicrobial proteins in saliva, tears, and gastric juice), and biological barriers (the gastrointestinal and urogenital microbiota, which compete with pathogens for space and nutrients). The intestines, serving as the primary interface with external antigens, represent the immunological epicenter where critical interactions between immune cells and microorganisms occur—an essential process for maintaining homeostasis and overall health.
