The skin, acting as a protective organ, provides protective cover to the human body against harmful environmental factors. It shields against bacterial and viral infections, light radiation, and mechanical factors. However, an increasing number of people are being diagnosed with skin allergies, which are unwanted reactions of the immune system to a specific trigger – food, medicine, pollen. Skin and food allergies may be interconnected. The most frequently diagnosed skin allergies include hives, atopic dermatitis (AD), and contact dermatitis.
What is atopic dermatitis?
Atopic dermatitis is regarded as a civilizational ailment that affects 10-30% of children and 1-3% of adults, more frequently occurring in women than men. It is a persistent skin condition that can recur and is often caused by genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. The predisposition to chronic atopic dermatitis is typically inherited within families, increasing the risk of the disease by 30-70% in cases of positive family history. Atopic dermatitis is also frequently associated with food allergens, inhalation allergens, weather conditions, and hormonal disorders. Dry skin is the most prominent feature of atopic dermatitis.
