Avoiding constipation during pregnancy

Constipation during pregnancy affects approximately 16% to 39% of expectant mothers. While a woman's body is physiologically adapted to the changes occurring during pregnancy, digestive disturbances can still arise. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, frequent urination, and irritability. These are caused by increased progesterone levels and reduced motilin secretion, a hormone that regulates intestinal motility. Additionally, the expanding uterus exerts pressure on the stomach, impairing digestion. Without proper prevention, complications such as hemorrhoids may develop. Therefore, maintaining a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity is crucial not only to alleviate symptoms but also to prevent their occurrence entirely.

Effective ways to manage constipation during pregnancy

Incorporating a balanced diet and regular physical activity can significantly reduce the severity of constipation symptoms or even prevent digestive issues during pregnancy. Movement is crucial, especially during this period, as it improves circulation, supports bodily functions, and maintains a healthy weight. Additionally, there are natural products that can aid digestion. The most effective include flaxseeds and certain fruits, which can be prepared as infusions. Due to their high fiber and active compound content, they enhance intestinal motility. Proper hydration is also essential, as the body absorbs more fluids from the large intestine to prevent dehydration, leading to harder stools. Natural juices without additives can also help. Sugar, white bread, rice, pasta, and fast food should be avoided. Recommended foods include apples, dried plums, whole grains, almonds, honey-infused water, and probiotic dairy products. Constipation is a common issue during pregnancy, but it can be easily prevented through proper nutrition, exercise, and drinking at least 2 liters of water daily.
