What constitutes irritable bowel syndrome?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by recurring abdominal discomfort that occurs on average at least one day per week over the past three months. Diagnosis requires meeting at least two of the following criteria: 1) association with bowel movements, 2) alteration in stool frequency, 3) changes in stool appearance. Historically, IBS was not recognized as a distinct medical condition. Currently, diagnosis is based on the so-called Rome IV criteria. Variants include diarrhea-predominant, constipation-predominant, mixed, or unclassified forms. Diagnosis is made by a gastroenterologist. IBS is prevalent worldwide, particularly in developed nations, potentially linked to lifestyle factors. Women are more commonly affected than men, especially between ages 20–40. The condition may, but does not necessarily, have a familial component. IBS not only diminishes patients' quality of life but also imposes significant economic burdens on healthcare systems. Research from 2003 indicated that IBS is among the most frequent reasons for gastroenterology consultations and medical leave certificates issued by internists (J. M. Inadomi, M. B. Fennerty, D. Bjorkman 2003).
