Strength exercises are not intended solely for the young - they can be started at any age, and the benefits they bring are extremely useful due to the changes that occur in the bodies of older people in all systems, particularly the bone and blood systems. However, seniors embarking on their exercise journey should follow a few special recommendations.
Strength training for seniors - a sample workout plan
Due to their reduced physical capacity and higher injury risk, seniors should tailor their strength training to their individual capabilities. A workout program should be gradually intensified to allow the body to adapt to new demands. Exercises should be selected based on muscle strength and required recovery time. It is advisable to start with isolated movements and later progress to more complex exercises, while avoiding overly intense movements like barbell squats. A sample plan consists of two cycles (A and B) performed with a day of rest in between. Each session should begin with a warm-up and end with stretching to prevent injuries.
