Fats are one of the primary sources of energy in our diet. It's commonly believed that consuming too much fat is detrimental to our health. This information can be interpreted differently. The most crucial aspect of consuming fat is not the quantity, but the quality and the ratio between them. Lately, there's been a lot of talk about omega-3s and omega-6s, and their ratio can have a significant impact on our health or contribute to the development of many serious diseases. If you'd like to understand the reasons behind this phenomenon, I invite you to read this article.
The role of fats in a balanced diet: strategies to limit saturated fatty acids and cholesterol intake
A well-structured and diverse diet necessitates careful selection of fat sources to mitigate the adverse health effects associated with excessive intake of saturated fatty acids—compounds characterized by the absence of double bonds in their carbon chains. These acids exhibit a well-documented hypercholesterolemic effect, elevating low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, thereby accelerating the progression of atherogenic plaque formation within arterial walls and increasing susceptibility to malignant transformations, particularly in colorectal, prostate, and breast tissues. Concurrently, dietary cholesterol intake must be rigorously controlled, with a recommended daily maximum of 300 milligrams for adults to prevent cardiovascular complications. The primary dietary sources of these deleterious components include animal-derived products such as high-fat meats (pork, beef, lamb), processed meats, eggs (with yolks being particularly rich in cholesterol), full-fat dairy products (butter, cream, aged cheeses), and certain plant-based fats with elevated saturated fatty acid content, notably palm oil, coconut oil, and cocoa butter. Systematic reduction of these items in the diet has been shown to substantially lower the incidence of diet-related diseases.
