Field horsetail (Equisetum arvense) – a prehistoric botanical remnant with contemporary therapeutic applications
Though commonly dismissed as a mere weed proliferating across Polish meadows and roadsides, field horsetail (Equisetum arvense) boasts a lineage stretching back to the Paleozoic era—some 400 million years ago—when its ancestors attained the stature of modern coniferous trees. Unlike the vast majority of prehistoric flora, this botanical relic endured successive mass extinctions and climatic upheavals, persisting through geological epochs to thrive in contemporary ecosystems. The plant’s vernacular name derives from a distinctive acoustic phenomenon: when its dry, ridged stems are rubbed between the fingers, they emit a faint, squeaking resonance reminiscent of a bow drawn across violin strings.
While Poland’s native flora includes over a dozen horsetail species, only Equisetum arvense has garnered recognition in phytotherapy owing to its exceptional biochemical composition. The plant exhibits a near-cosmopolitan distribution, with natural habitats spanning from the northernmost reaches of Europe through temperate regions of Asia and North Africa to the North American continent. Ancient textual records, including those of classical scholars, document its historical use as a hemostatic agent to accelerate blood coagulation. However, modern scientific inquiry has unveiled a far broader spectrum of health-promoting properties, attributable to its rich array of bioactive compounds. These include polyphenols (with flavonoids present at concentrations of 0.3–1%), tannins, saponins, macro- and micronutrients (constituting 15–20% of dry weight), organic acids (such as silicic, benzoic, malic, and citric acids), phytosterols, and silicon-based compounds—all of which play pivotal roles in its pharmacological mechanisms.
