Characterization and categorization of sarcopenia in geriatric contexts
Sarcopenia represents a critical geriatric condition marked by the progressive deterioration of muscle tissue and the concomitant decline in functional strength, thereby elevating susceptibility to fall-related injuries, impairing autonomous daily living, and increasing mortality rates. As outlined by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2), this disorder may be systematically categorized based on its underlying causative factors and temporal progression. Distinctions are made between a primary variant (occurring without identifiable external triggers), a secondary variant (linked to comorbid conditions, nutritional deficiencies, or physical inactivity), and—depending on duration—an acute phase (lasting fewer than six months) and a chronic phase (extending beyond six months), as comprehensively documented in the 2019 publication by Cruz-Jentoft et al.
