Die postpartale Depression betrifft etwa 10 bis 20 Prozent der Wöchnerinnen und tritt damit deutlich seltener auf als das sogenannte "Baby-Blues-Syndrom". Typische Merkmale dieser Erkrankung sind abrupt auftretende Stimmungswechsel, erhöhte Ängstlichkeit sowie eine Neigung zu Weinen. Die betroffene Frau kann sich von der neuen Lebenssituation überfordert fühlen, was in extremen Fällen zu einem emotionalen Distanzierungsprozess vom Säugling oder sogar zu Schwierigkeiten in der Kinderbetreuung führen kann. Die Ursachen sind multifaktoriell, doch eine zentrale Rolle spielen die raschen hormonellen Umstellungen nach der Entbindung, die sich auf die Neurochemie des Gehirns und die emotionale Regulationsfähigkeit auswirken.

Symptoms of postpartum depression

In the treatment of postpartum depression, the most important thing is the support of loved ones and the feeling that you can count on their help. Providing such comfort gives a woman a sense of security and strength to deal with depression and sadness. It's also important to maintain a constant relationship between mother and child and their close contact. Unfortunately, sometimes you can't go without pharmacotherapy with antidepressants or a visit to a psychologist or psychiatrist.
