Physiological transformations in the bodies of older adults and their implications for nutritional requirements and metabolic functions
As the aging process advances, older adults experience a gradual decline in fat-free muscle mass, concurrently accompanied by an increase in the proportion of adipose tissue within the body composition. These structural alterations result in a substantial reduction in daily energy requirements that must be met through dietary intake. Should seniors maintain their long-established dietary patterns—without adjusting the quantity and quality of meals to align with their diminished caloric needs—there exists a heightened risk of developing excess body weight or even obesity, stemming from a persistent surplus in energy balance. Conversely, a significant portion of the elderly population exhibits diminished hunger sensations or a complete loss of appetite, a phenomenon directly attributable to hormonal imbalances. Such endocrine shifts lead to delayed gastric emptying, which in turn induces premature satiety even after consuming minimal food portions. An additional complicating factor is the progressive reduction in stomach capacity, further limiting the ability to ingest adequate nutritional volumes. Furthermore, many older individuals experience an impairment in olfactory and gustatory perception, which further diminishes the incentive for regular food consumption. Of equal importance are the degenerative changes occurring within the gastrointestinal tract—particularly in the stomach and intestines—which may precipitate a variety of digestive disorders as well as impediments to the absorption of critical nutrients. The cumulative effect of these adverse developments often manifests as deficiencies in essential micro- and macronutrients, alongside chronic gastrointestinal discomfort, both of which can adversely impact overall health and quality of life over the long term.
