Exceptionally fascinating is the comprehension that the manner in which our potential capabilities, encoded in our DNA, manifest in our lives is also contingent on our exposure to environmental factors, including our nourishment. The critical periods that impact a human's quality of life encompass the prenatal phase and postnatal development, thereby rendering appropriate nourishment of neonates indispensable.

The role of gluten in infant nutrition

Introducing supplementary meals into an infant's diet during the first year of life is necessary to meet increasing nutritional needs. It is recommended to start offering new foods between the 17th and 26th week of life. Gluten, a protein found in grains, is the subject of ongoing debates. Despite the lack of scientific evidence supporting its harmfulness, many parents choose to exclude it. It is often wrongly associated with autoimmune diseases, whose actual causes are entirely different. Ongoing research aims to develop optimal guidelines for gluten introduction. Current studies do not confirm a link between the timing of gluten introduction and the risk of celiac disease or type 1 diabetes. Therefore, existing recommendations allow for a flexible approach.

Introducing gluten into a child's diet

Current guidelines for introducing gluten into an infant's diet have undergone significant changes compared to past recommendations. Approximately a decade ago, the standard practice was to gradually introduce this protein between the 5th and 6th month of life, starting with small amounts as an additive to vegetable purees. This approach was intended to theoretically reduce the risk of developing celiac disease. However, recent scientific studies do not support this hypothesis, leading to a revision of previous recommendations. Today, there is no justification for introducing gluten in specific quantities or at a specific time.
