Many consumers regard cornflakes as a component of a balanced diet, especially for breakfast. But does their composition and processing justify this perception? Let’s examine their actual nutritional properties and potential health implications in detail.
Corn flakes
As the name suggests, the main ingredient of cornflakes is corn, which should be the only ingredient in them. Unfortunately, most corn flakes on the market today also contain high amounts of sugar and salt, which increase the risk of diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure.
Corn flakes composition
When choosing cornflakes, keep in mind that their composition should be as short as possible. Many of the ingredients on the label should be a warning saying e.g. that artificial substances and sugar are added to the cereal and that it has adverse health effects. Let's look at the composition of some of the most commonly purchased cereal flakes.
Are cornflakes healthy?
The corn itself contains many nutrients, but the process of processing removes most of them. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, many brands of cereals add sugar, flavourings and syrups to them, which further increase their glycemic index, thereby increasing the risk of civilization diseases. However, if you decide to consume them, make sure they do not contain genetically modified corn. If you love corn flakes and can imagine breakfast without them, choose those of short composition and produced from organic maize.
